CHURCH HISTORY

Como Community Church has a great heritage. During the winter of 1889 and 1890, a few people of the community met weekly in the various homes for prayer and spiritual communion. Early the following summer, they organized a Sabbath School, holding meetings in the Davidson School, with attendance of twenty-five to thirty. Services were discontinued during the cold winter, but resumed for the 1891 season.

The next year, 1892, the first regular preaching service was held, and the place of meeting was moved to the Geneva Town Hall. Fourteen people, who had been worshiping in the homes, united to organize a church, drawing up a charter in February of 1900.

Just two years later, on February 11, 1902, the Como Church was dedicated. In addition to the worship services held at hours to accommodate the farmer members and commuting pastors, they had a Sunday School, a Ladies Aid Society, weekly prayer meetings, and missionary enterprises.

The first addition to the Church was built in 1933. A classroom built on the east side of the Church provided more room for the Sunday School, and later, was divided to provide an office.

The first parsonage which the Church ever owned, was purchased in 1945. This house was built by the Reynolds family on a one acre plot of land on their farm. Later, a new parsonage was built on the land adjoining the new Church and dedicated in May, 1969.

In 1953, there was the construction of a wing to the Sanctuary. A basement was put in under the entire Church The name of the Church was changed from the Union Church at Como to the Como Community Church.

Construction of the new Church began in the fall of 1964. It was built on a five acre plot of land which was purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Chester McKaig and Mr. and Mrs. George Jacobsen. The new building was dedicated on August 15, 1965.

During the years, Como Community Church has always remained true to its commission, preaching and teaching, "the whole Bible, for the whole man, for the whole world." It has always extended an invitation for everyone for worship within it's walls, regardless of their denominational backgrounds. It has been a Church for all the Community. With God's blessings, it has grown.
